Beyond the Blank Page: Therapeutic Applications of Altered Book Art in Art Therapy Practice

Learning Objectives:
Explore how perceived artistic ability, perfectionism, and unfamiliarity with art materials can contribute to intimidation or hesitation during art-making.
Identify therapeutic benefits of altered bookmaking.
Demonstrate at least 2 altered book techniques.
Describe at least 2 ways altered books can be adapted for diverse clinical populations.
An altered book is transforming a book into a personal art piece using mixed media. The original books are usually recycled, and then altered by use of a variety of techniques and materials. This is an expressive form of art that can be geared towards a variety of populations.
Materials needed (be sure they are ready for training)
-A hardcover book to alter (check out local libraries for discarded books, thrift stores, marketplace)
-Drawing materials
-Preferably paint markers but not required
-Mixed media (stickers, washi tape, tissue paper, watercolor)
-Materials that you enjoy working with (altered book making can include a wide variety of materials)
Attendees will:
1. Gain insight relating to the objectives
2. Engage in experiential exercises that can be used with clients
3. Receive handout(s) supportive to this training. Slides will not be provided.
4. Gain a 2.0 hour CE certificate once evaluation is completed, after attending the full 2 hour training
5. Learn alongside other art therapists/students
Please note: CE activities approved through the ATCB Authorized Art Therapy Continuing Education Provider Program cannot be guaranteed to be accepted by state licensing boards. Please refer to your state’s CE eligibility requirements.
This training is for art therapists or students in art therapy programs.
